Amy + Jason {Muhammad Ali Center Wedding}

Amy and Jason were married at the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville, KY.  We started the day at the Galt House where they had a sweet, romantic first look on the Belvedere.  The Muhammad Ali Center is a great atmosphere for a wedding.  Congrats to Amy and Jason!

What to Wear at an Engagement Session

What you wear to your engagement session can have a real impact on the overall appearance of your photos. It’s no easy task to find clothing that is not only flattering, but compliments what the other person is wearing.  Here are a few tips that will hopefully help you in your search for the perfect outfits!

Choosing Coordinating Clothing

It’s important that the clothing of each person isn’t exactly the same color, yet still looks nice together.  If there is too much contrast between the shirts, one might stand out more than the other. Examples of colors that coordinate nicely are cream and brown, navy and red, purple and blue, and yellow and green. There are of course an infinite number of colors that will work!  Try laying the clothing out on the bed to see what looks good together.  A small pattern and a solid can be easy to match and look great in a photo.

Choosing a Flattering Outfit

Wear Slim-Fitting Clothes

Clothes that hug and slim your body without being too tight will make you look your best in front of the camera.  It’s important to wear clothes that fit you well.  Baggy outfits can make you appear bigger than you actually are.  Clothes that are too tight-fitting can accentuate your curves, especially ones that you might not want to be accentuated (wearing spandex under clothes can help to smooth undesired curves).  I recommend having someone take a photo of you wearing the clothing from the front and the side, even if it is just a cell phone picture.  If there are things about the outfit you don’t like, there is a good chance you won’t like it in your professional photos either.

Patterns and Colors

If you are concerned about appearing slimmer in your photos, colors and patterns can make a difference.  Clothes with a slimming pattern such as zig-zags can give an overall smaller look to your body.  Try to wear dark colors such as browns, blacks, or navies.  Darker colors tend to contour your body.  Horizontal stripes will make you look wider, and vertical stripes aren’t much more flattering.  Bold patterns and stripes tend to focus the attention to the clothing instead of the subject.

If you aren’t on the tall side and want to appear taller, don’t wear a light top and dark pants together as this tends to break the appearance of the body in half and make you appear shorter.  Clothes of a similar tone from head to toe will give you a taller appearance.

What NOT to Wear

Very bright florescent colors have become very popular, but they do not photograph well.  Not only do they draw too much attention, but they reflect the color onto the faces of the couple.  White also tends to draw attention away from the face and appears very bright in the photographs.

Before the Session

ALWAYS try on all of the clothing  prior to the session.  This includes undergarments!  Make sure the items are pressed and clean.  Wrinkles will show!

Pay particular attention to your makeup before the session. Even if you don’t typically wear much makeup, this can really enhance your appearance in photos.  Having a professional makeup artist can really make a difference, especially if you aren’t used to applying it on your own, and they can make it look very natural.

If your session will be in an area where you will be walking in grass or for long distances, it would be a good idea to bring comfortable shoes.

Be sure not to have wallets, keys, phones, etc. in your pockets.

If you are unsure of your clothing choices, you can always send a photo and I would be happy to make a recommendation!
